This is a rectangular bonsai pot by Saita Sanpo, who is well known as a master of Tokoname unglazed bonsai pottery. It features a hand-incised signature, a mark of his handcrafted work.
The pot displays the beautiful texture of Tokoname karasudei (black clay).
Saita Sanpo worked for Ina Seito Co., Ltd. (now INAX) for many years before becoming independent in 1965.
He began making bonsai pots in 1974. At first, he mainly produced unglazed bonsai pots using molded forming techniques, but later shifted his focus to custom-made handcrafted pots using the traditional tatara (slab-building) method.
Both his molded and handcrafted works are predominantly unglazed bonsai pots. His designs include rectangular and oval forms, while his handcrafted pieces also feature hexagonal, old mirror-shaped, and mokko (quatrefoil) forms, demonstrating his mastery of a wide variety of shapes.
